March 2021 Newsletter

“[We need] longer tables rather than higher walls.” ~ Chef Jose Andres – Founder, World Central Kitchen

Just a quick recap of our latest activities:

  • In the month of March we have donated over 400 meals, along with various dry goods and fresh produce, worth $1,573. Thank you chef and commercial partners!
  • We are working with DNRec’s Brownfield Development Program to identify a potential site for the eco-village. In our minds, cleaning up a polluted site while we’re building an environmentally friendly living space is a win-win.
  • Cass is working with garden site hosts to prepare each site for planting in late April/early May. We are going to have initial planting events at a number of these sites, but have not scheduled specific dates yet. Expect announcements soon!

Welcome Aboard!

Donna Shae

Currently, Donna is serving as a Chef partner for our organization in our efforts to address regional food insecurity. But as you will read, she has a whole lot more experience and insight from which we will benefit!

Born in Philly, raised in South Jersey, educated at University of Delaware and then law school at American University in the District of Columbia, Donna’s experience and travels in life have brought her back to the mid-Atlantic. As a litigation attorney in the D.C. area, she handled medical malpractice and general civil litigation in private practice, then 7+years at the State Department working on international litigation. After the State Department, Donna was the Legal Director for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).She has appeared on national radio and television, has crafted Supreme Court briefs, published a novel, and won numerous legal and culinary awards. During her entire working life, Donna provided food, organized holiday parties and co-worker celebrations, and cooked for her family, friends and neighbors. Her FIRST love, it turned out, wasn’t The Law, or even Elvis (although Elvis was in the running for several years). It was cooking. Donna eventually attended culinary school at L’Academie de Cuisine and has been studying nutrition and food trends for 20 years. With her husband Steve, she purchased and operated The Yellow House in North Carolina where she also opened a restaurant and a catering business. She has cooked privately and publicly, for members of Congress, for ambassadors, and for soup kitchens. After she sold the inn, Donna moved across the country for several years and was the Catering Director for Whole Foods in Campbell, CA. Having returned to Delaware, Donna became the Executive Chef at The Addy Sea in Bethany Beach. Recently retired from that historic inn, Donna has resumed cooking for private clients using the freshest, local, seasonal ingredients. She is an avid bicyclist, voracious reader, and fitness nut. Married for 38 years, she also has one magnificent son, in Manhattan, and 4 cats.

Bridget Sunday

Bridget joins us as a Communications and Social Media Consultant. We are so fortunate (and relieved!) to have someone with expertise in such matters.

“Originally from Central New Jersey, I now reside in beautiful Petaluma, California with my husband Jeff and our two senior cats. In addition to teaching art in Marin County, I am also an avid hiker and biker. If I’m not on the trail, I’m at an Oakland A’s baseball game! Living in the heart of wine country has given me an incredible perspective on the future of sustainable and pesticide-free farming which I hope to share with you all. I am so thankful to Teresa and Cass for allowing me to join the team, and I look forward to helping build something special for the community.”
